2015 Year of the soil: the important, the valuable, ours!
The soil is one of the most important ecosystems in nature. With its variety of organisms interacting and contributing to global cycles, the soil is one of the most diverse habitats on earth. It is in the basis of all alive. It is a matter of fact that nowhere in the nature you can see such a concentration of species – over 1,000 invertebrate species in 1 sq. m. forest soil. These organisms are the soul of the soil. They perform numerous vital functions in the soil ecosystem, which have direct interaction with atmospheric, biological and hydrological systems. They are responsible for the circulation of nutrients, balance of soil substances, Carbon dioxide sequestration, plants` health and many others.
Interactions between organisms in the soil on one side, and between plants and animals in the ecosystem on other side, form a complex system of actions and relationships. These functions and interactions are important points for sustainable agriculture. The Man as an exploiter of the land by agriculture, must be aware of his intervention on biodiversity. Our agricultural activities obviously affect soil organisms. Excessive exploitation over the soil and misuse of agrochemicals are the main weapons with which the modern man destroys life in the soil and therefore its fertility.
Healthy soil is the beginning! The food we eat is a reflection of our actions to the soil.
The world is upset! 33% of the global soil is eroded. These data is disastrous. We are on the way of destroying the “table”, we are eating on. 2015 is declared “A year of the soil”. Fortunately, Bulgaria is away from this black statistics, but do we have to wait until it become too late?
It would be foolishly, if we do not take advantage of the experience, knowledge and methods of those who struggle with this reality.
Everything depends on us!
